What this tool is
Know Your Limits is a free, anonymous burnout risk assessment designed to be fast and honest. It draws on established burnout research, in particular dimensions identified by occupational health psychologists. This test is not a medical diagnosis and should not replace professional advice.
Why I built this
I built this after my own experience with the system this tool tries to shortcut. When my GP suspected burnout, the waiting list just to get a structured assessment at a specialist clinic was over six months. When I finally got the appointment, the psychiatrist's structured questionnaire suggested burnout was actually unlikely to be the main cause of my symptoms — which meant I had spent months looking in the wrong direction.
A faster first-pass answer would have changed that. So, drawing on an academic research background, I built one: a structured self-assessment based on the same dimensional framework used in occupational health research, available to anyone, immediately, in their own language. It is a first filter — not a diagnosis — designed to help you decide whether burnout is worth investigating further or whether to look elsewhere for the root cause.
The scoring approach, dimensions and research references are documented openly on the methodology page.
The science behind the test
Burnout is recognised by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress. Research in occupational health psychology has identified five core dimensions: exhaustion, mental distance from work, cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, and recovery and sleep quality which research consistently links to burnout risk.
